Receiver of Memory
This is the job that Jonas is assigned after the Ceremony of Twelve. The job entails remembering the elements of the past, which the community has suppressed.
Stirrings

Children are allowed to have a comfort object until they reach the age of eight. For example, Lily, Jonas's little sister, has a stuffed elephant as her comfort object.
See Beyond
This is a rare quality in the community, characterized by light colored eyes. Someone who can See Beyond has the ability to see color, feel emotion, and become the Receiver of Memory.
Nurterer
This job within the community takes cares of the infants (up until age one) and determines if the babies are appropriately reaching important milestones.
Asher
Jonas' best friend, Asher, struggled with school growing up. However, he eventually becomes Assistant Director of Recreation, and he and Jonas grow apart as they learn more about their new jobs.
Assistant Director of Recreation
This is the job assignment given to Jonas's best friend, Asher. He is responsible for community events.
Precision of Language
This phrase is used by the community to encourage children and adults to speak using proper grammar, vocabulary, and inflection.
Fiona
Fiona is Jonas' friend, but he later discovers that he likes her more than a friend. In fact, one of the first colors he sees is her fiery red hair. She is assigned to be Caretaker for the Old.
Larissa
Larissa is an elderly woman who Jonas works with during his volunteer hours. She is a minor character, however she provides key information to Jonas about the Release process and what happens to old people in the community.
