Technologies for group communication and collaboration allow intricate business relationships to exist and deliver productivity no matter where the employee is located. Groupware, teleconferencing and virtual worlds are three ways that technology is changing the face of the workplace.

Technologies for Group Communication

Did you ever envision working from home while still having a prestigious job? How about having your co-workers exist not just in the local office, but across the globe? Technologies for group communication and collaboration allow intricate business relationships to exist and deliver productivity, no matter where the employee is located, through technology. Groupware, teleconferencing and virtual worlds are three ways that technology is changing the face of the workplace.

Pear Products is the biggest manufacturer and seller of computers and tablets in the world. Peter Pod recently was hired as a sales representative for Pear Products. As an added perk, he is allowed to work from home two days a week when not on the road selling. Pear Products is providing him with a quick overview of the technology that is available for him to communicate and collaborate with his team.

Groupware

The first technology that Peter receives from Pear Products is his laptop with groupware. Groupware is a set of programs that allows workers to communicate and collaborate together from remote locations. It allows easy collaboration with workers to share calendars, appointment updates, email and even databases. Peter is looking forward to building his first sales presentation together via groupware with a seasoned sales representative through Microsoft Office Live and Google Docs. Peter is excited to have the flexibility and time-saving option of groupware.

Teleconferencing

Teleconferencing is another way to use technology for group communication and collaboration. It is the ability to conduct an audio or visual meeting through a telecommunications channel. The workers are linked electronically and are able to use an interactive two-way environment to actively participate in the communication. Conferences can take place either via audio, which is sound through use of telephone, or video, which is through use of cameras or web-cameras.

Virtual Worlds

The third type of technology that aids group communication and collaboration is the use of virtual worlds, which are online 3D computer-simulated environments where the users can create their own avatar. This type of technology is growing very popular in the business world due to the fact that it saves money, lowers costs, and offers flexibility and security. It is also interactive and can reach a large audience. The four uses for virtual worlds are:
