In Chapter 22 of 'The Giver' by Lois Lowry, Jonas and Gabriel have escaped their community, but now what? In this lesson, we will summarize Chapter 22 and look at some quotes.

Jonas' Disappearance

After learning that the young child, Gabriel, who has been staying with Jonas' family will be executed for crying through the night, Jonas has stolen his father's bicycle and disappeared from the community with Gabriel. At first, search planes looked for them, but they have given up. Jonas continues to pedal as far away from the community as possible. Has he made the right decision? In this lesson, we will summarize Chapter 22 of The Giver by Lois Lowry.

Jonas' Injury

Will their escape be everything Jonas thought it would be? As Jonas gets farther away from civilization, road conditions worsen. Fortunately, Gabriel is not hurt when Jonas crashes the bike, but Jonas twists his ankle and scrapes his knees. Jonas and Gabriel see their first waterfall, deer, and birds. The landscape is beautiful, and the freedom makes Jonas happy, but he begins to worry. 'He was newly aware that Gabriel's safety depended entirely upon his own continued strength.'

Jonas Questions His Decision

Is Jonas' injury the main obstacle they face? Jonas' biggest fear is that they will starve to death. Jonas finds some berries and catches some fish, but he is aware of constant hunger. 'Once he had yearned for choice. Then, when he had had a choice, he had made the wrong one: the choice to leave. And now he was starving.' Was leaving the wrong choice? Gabriel might have some chance at a life now. Could Jonas have survived without feelings?
