How Much Does the MCAT Cost?

Applying for medical school can be overwhelming and expensive, but knowing costs up front can help you save money and be prepared. Read on to learn about the fees associated with taking the MCAT, and get registration tips and study advice.

MCAT Fees

The fees associated with the MCAT can vary slightly depending on how early you register for your desired test date. The table below explains the options for registration and their associated fees.

MCAT Fee Assistance

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), which administers the MCAT, also offers a fee assistance program for students in the U.S. with legal citizenship or residency status. Eligibility for the program is determined by family size and income relative to the US poverty level for the previous year. The table below explains the options for registration and the associated fees for students receiving assistance.

Traveling for the Exam

In order to better accommodate students traveling to take the MCAT, the AAMC offers a discounted rate at certain hotels, depending on room availability. The discount is usually 5% off the best rate available.

MCAT Registration

MCAT registration is completed online through the AAMC website. After creating a user account, you'll need to determine a test date and location. It's important to have a few scheduling options in mind before completing this process. Researching the available testing dates and locations to identify any that could fit your schedule could be helpful, as your first choice might not be available. Additionally, there are several items you'll want to have on hand when registering for the MCAT:

  • Your AAMC ID
  • Government ID
  • A Visa or MasterCard
  • Undergraduate coursework completed

Test Dates

The MCAT is offered throughout the year. Registration generally opens at least three months prior to an exam date. In 2016, exams will be held during the following months:

  • January
  • April
  • May
  • June
  • July
  • August
  • September
