Instructor: Shelby Golden
New York has two algebra Regents exams for high school students. Find out how to prepare for each of these tests, and get information on when they can be taken and what topics will be covered.

How Can I Prepare for the NYS Algebra Regents Exams?

New York high school students can take the Algebra I exam to meet math testing requirements for their Regents diploma. Students who want to earn an Advanced Regents diploma must pass the Algebra I and Algebra II tests. These exams are connected to courses of the same name, so regular attendance and participation in class, as well as completion of in-class activities and homework assignments, can help make sure you're ready for these tests. Some additional suggestions to help you prepare are outlined below.

Learn When You'll Need to Take These Exams

The Algebra exams are typically offered in morning and afternoon testing sessions in January, June and August. You can find exact dates on the New York State Department of Education website (www.p12.nysed.gov). Knowing when you will take your exams can help ensure you have enough study time to go over all of the mathematics concepts you'll need to be familiar with on test day.

Find Out What the Exams Are Like

Understanding the content of these exams can also help you decide how much time you need to devote to studying. Both of the Algebra I and Algebra II exams test your knowledge of the number system, algebraic expressions, systems of equations, functions and statistics and probability. Make sure you prioritize studying the topics you have the most difficulty with over ones you find less challenging. A complete breakdown of exam content can be found on the Engage NY website (www.engageny.org).

Familiarizing yourself with the tools you'll be allowed to use on exam day should also be a part of your preparations. You'll be permitted to use a graphing calculator and ruler during the Algebra I and II exams as well as a reference sheet containing a conversion chart and geometric formulas. Each of these tests includes roughly 40 questions, consisting of multiple-choice and constructed-response items, to be completed over the course of a three-hour testing session.
