Instructor: Shelby Golden
Get familiar with Minnesota's science standards for 3rd grade with this article. Find out what scientific concepts students will work on in this grade and explore study options.

3rd Grade Science Standards

Students in 3rd grade in Minnesota will work on understanding physical, earth and life science. They will also explore the basis of science and engineering practices, which will encourage practice in scientific inquiry. Teachers will use Minnesota-developed benchmarks to assess student progress through each of these subjects in class.

Physical Science

While working on physical science, students will focus on studying energy. Sound and light energy will be the primary considerations in this grade. To meet benchmarks, students will need to demonstrate an understanding of shadows and the ways that light travels and. They will also be asked to explain the connections between pitch and vibration.

Earth Science

Information about the universe will be studied in this grade. Students will explore the locations of the sun and moon, as well as other objects in our solar system. Assessments will be conducted to ensure students understand the movement of the moon. Kids will also discuss how distance can make things look smaller or larger, and will review the orbit of the planets in the solar system.

Life Science

Students will go over structures and functions of living creatures in this grade. They will explore the characteristics of different animals. Evolution and changes from parents to offspring will also be covered. Students will need to compare the structures found in plant and animal life. They will also use characteristics and behaviors to identify living creatures. Time will be spent exploring similarities and differences between different generations of living organisms.

Science and Engineering

In this grade, students will dig into field-specific practices of science and the relationship between science and society. They will explore individual and group scientific activities, as well as the steps involved in scientific inquiry. Students will learn more about scientific and engineering accomplishments throughout history, as well as the tools that scientists have used. Kids will work on using evidence to support their claims, in addition to coming up with scientific questions. They will go over the importance of repeating results and keeping accurate records. Different forms of scientific discovery will be discussed. Students will also learn to handle some of the tools used in the sciences.

Study Resources

Students at this grade level can access this Science for Kids course to get extra practice with these concepts. This course covers the steps in the scientific process, as well as astronomy. There are lessons that deal with different plants and animals, as well as different kinds of energy. Students can work at their own pace and complete lessons at any time. Kids can check their understanding of different subjects by completing short quizzes. They can even reach out to science experts if they get stuck while working on a specific concept.

Students can also check out this lesson on 3rd Grade Science Vocabulary Words to go over the terms they need to be familiar with. These Science Games for 3rd Grade can provide fun opportunities for kids to reinforce what they're learning in the classroom. Finally, students can use this lesson on 3rd Grade Science Fair Projects if they need some ideas to make an awesome project.
