Choosing a Good Senior Project Idea

Before you pick an idea for your senior project you should make sure it meets the requirements of your school. Many schools require a senior project to include researching a subject, writing a paper, demonstrating a technical skill and making an oral presentation of your completed project. If your school has different requirements, you should keep them in mind before selecting a project idea.

Examples of Senior Project Ideas

Creating Something

If you're a creative individual, this kind of project is for you! You could focus on making a:

  • Painting
  • Book (fiction, nonfiction or poetry)
  • Video

While creating an object cannot be the entirety of your project, it can give you a good starting point. If you decide to paint or write, you could write your research paper on your favorite painter or writer, or the history of the art style you're going to use. You could also write about the challenges of working with visual media or your favorite novel.

Quick Tip:

Performing

If you're comfortable performing in front of people, you might be interested in a project that involves:

  • Playing a musical piece
  • A drama production

Working backward from your demonstration, you can focus your research paper on a specific form of music, or any number of plays or playwrights.

Real World Experiences

This type of project gives you lots of potential options. What are you interested in doing? You could focus on the following examples:

  • Running a marathon
  • Creating a fitness program
  • Practicing a martial art

Your research paper for these projects will need to focus on a specific topic related to the physical activity you're performing. You could research different running styles or the way runners train. You could also research different fitness programs and how they affect the human body or study the history behind various martial arts.
