What Are the CLEP Exam Dates

Instructor: Carrie Soucy
Students who pass CLEP tests can earn college credit for general education courses, saving them time and money on the path to a college degree. Read on to learn about CLEP test dates and locations and find out how to prepare for these exams.

When and Where to Take CLEP Tests

CLEP exams are administered throughout the year at almost 2,000 testing centers, many of which are located on college and university campuses. However, the College Board allows each testing center to determine its own test dates.

Students can search for testing centers online (clep.collegeboard.org) and contact their selected location to determine available testing appointments. Once they find a test date that fits into their schedule, they can initiate the registration process on the College Board website.

What You Need to Know Before Test Day

The most important factor students should take into consideration before signing up for an exam is their schools' CLEP policies. Individual colleges and universities ultimately determine how many credit hours may be earned via CLEP exams and set minimum passing scores. Check the College Board website to find out if your college or university is one of over 2,900 schools accepting this form of credit. You might also want to be aware of the following facts:

  • 33 CLEP tests are available in 5 subject areas.
  • Exams range from 90 to 120 minutes in length.
  • Each CLEP test costs $85.
  • Test scores range from 20 to 80 points.
  • The recommended passing score is 50 points.
  • Test takers must wait three months before retaking a CLEP test.
  • Students may use their CLEP scores for 20 years after taking their tests.
