Taking the PSAT as a high school sophomore puts you ahead of the game on preparing for the SAT and other college entrance exams. Read on to learn what constitutes a good score for sophomores on the PSAT.

College Readiness Benchmarks

When you get your score report after taking the PSAT, each section will include a college readiness benchmark score. A good PSAT score constitutes meeting or exceeding the college readiness benchmarks on each section of the test.

The PSAT is aimed at preparing you for the SAT and college; therefore it also measures where you stand on your current skill level and test-taking abilities. College readiness benchmarks are set to determine whether you grasp high school material and are ready to progress onto college-level courses. You want to score in the appropriate range of a high school sophomore - this will indicate that you're right on track! The benchmarks also highlight skills you can improve upon.

Benefits of Taking The PSAT as A Sophomore

Taking the PSAT is probably one of the best ways to prepare for the SAT simply because it can give you crucial test-taking experience and give you a good indication of what's on the exam. While there are many SAT-prep courses and study guides available, these don't necessarily give you the experience of actually taking a test. The PSAT is a not quite as vigorous as the SAT but still a great base from which you can practice time allotment and focus on test-taking skills. Mastering the PSAT will help you feel more prepared going into the bigger test.

Taking the test as a sophomore gets you early exposure and will only increase your chances of obtaining good scores on the SAT. Additionally, doing well on the PSAT could open you up to scholarship opportunities. The PSAT 10 exam is commonly taken by sophomores, but you can check with your guidance counselor to see if you should take the PSAT/NMST, which allows you to compete for the National Merit Scholarship.
