Students may pursue a bachelor's degree in a related field, such as economics or real estate law, in order to prepare for a career as an appraiser. Appraisers must pursue certification in order to legally work and are usually people who are meticulous and detail oriented.

Certificate in Appraisal Studies

Associate of Applied Science in Appraising

An Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Appraising program introduces students to a broader range of appraisal topics. Most associate degree programs deal specifically with real estate appraisal. Students are required to complete core appraisal courses and general education coursework over two years. Classes may be offered in:

License, Certification and Continuing Education Information

Appraisers must be certified in the state in which they wish to work. This certification varies by state but generally includes completing a certain number of hours in the field and passing a written examination. Most states only require certification for appraisers working in the field of real estate. Appraisers may pursue the title of Certified Residential Real Property Appraiser or Certified General Real Property Appraiser. The Appraisal Foundation establishes the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP), which is widely recognized in the field.

A variety of workshops are available to appraisers who wish to keep their knowledge of the field current. Workshops may be offered on-site or online and may address topics like market analysis and appraisal cost control. Seminars educate professionals on newly available appraisal technology or tools.

Appraisers must complete a minimum of 14 hours of continuing education in the field per year in order to maintain certification. Additionally, a 7-hour update course on USPAP must be completed every two years.
