Essential Information

Many schools offer online Bachelor of Business Administration programs, but only a few have an option to specialize in project management. Some of these programs can be completed 100% online. Other programs are offered in a hybrid format that combines online and on-campus courses. Most programs require four years of full-time study. However, there are degree-completion programs that require two years of previous coursework and only take two years to complete.

Students must complete general education courses in basic subjects such as English composition, natural sciences and mathematics as well as core courses in fundamental business topics such as accounting, management and business law and ethics. Some programs call for a capstone course that allows students to apply their knowledge of these practices and principles to a real-world situation.

Bachelor of Business Administration in Project Management

In online BBA programs with a concentration in project management, students are introduced to the fundamentals of planning, leading and delivering projects. This concentration is rare - most programs in project management are at the graduate level. A small number of bachelor's degree programs are affiliated with the Project Management Institute (PMI), which is the official membership organization for project management professionals.

Program Information and Requirements

Students can earn an online BBA with a concentration in project management in about four years - or longer if they only attend part-time. Two-year degree completion programs assume students have completed two years of coursework prior to being admitted. Not all programs offer 100% online coursework; some programs are hybrid, meaning students take courses both online and on-campus; however, some are on-campus only. Programs also offer students the option to combine their degree with a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

List of Common Project Management Courses

Online project management bachelor's degree programs require general education and business-related coursework. As part of their concentration, students take courses in the fundamentals of project management, including managing schedules and costs.

Introduction to Project Management

Students learn the essential elements of managing projects, including selecting, planning, initiating, managing, implementing, terminating and auditing. Emphasis is often placed on the development of leadership and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to keep projects on schedule and on budget.

Risk Assessment and Control

Students learn about the tools project and program managers use to evaluate and eliminate risk and to bring about continuous improvement. Other topics may include monitoring and reporting project performance and using preventive control methods.

Contracts

This course introduces students to the negotiation process that occurs between project managers and clients or vendors as they discuss the terms and conditions of a contract. Students also learn about legal issues surrounding contracts and how to ensure compliance from all involved parties.

Principles of Management

Online BBA programs typically include an introductory course in leadership or management. Students learn about the managerial decision-making process, conflict resolution, ethical leadership, employee motivation and effective communication strategies.

Career Information for Graduates

Graduates of online BBA programs with a concentration in project management can work on projects in fields like construction, engineering and information technology. In 2016, PayScale.com reported that the median annual salary for construction project managers was $73,818.

Continuing Education and Certification Information

Students who wish to pursue a graduate degree might consider an MBA with a concentration in project management or Master of Project Management, both of which are available online. Individuals entering the workforce with a bachelor's degree in project management can pursue the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM). Though not required for employment, professional certification can lead to quicker advancement and a higher salary. CAPMs must take the certification exam every five years to get recertified.

Although project management is not a common topic of study within undergraduate programs, there are online BBA programs that offer a specialization in the subject. In addition to studying core business topics, students learn about the development and implementation of complex projects in a wide range of fields, such as construction and engineering, and they can get a job in one of these industries when they finish or continue their studies at the MBA level.
