The best graduate schools for school psychology provide comprehensive training in the field and may offer clinical experience and/or research opportunities. They include the University of California in Berkeley, Fordham University, Syracuse University and Ball State University.

The University of California, Berkeley, CA

School Highlight: The university houses research centers, research projects, and outreach programs.

UCB's Graduate School of Education offers a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in School Psychology. This is a 6- to 7-year program that includes field experiences in school settings and prepares students for positions in public schools, universities and mental health clinics. Once enrolled, students learn about the theoretical and scientific aspects of school psychology, as well as the diagnosis of learning and other disabilities.

Fordham University in New York, NY

School Highlight: The School Psychology programs at this university will help students to build a better foundation for a career in education, mental health and other various levels of psychological application.

The university offers a professional diploma program in School Psychology (P.D.), in addition to a Ph.D. program in School Psychology. A graduate certificate is also offered, and a Bilingual School Psychology (P.D.) program.

Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY

School Highlight: This university's Ph.D. in School Psychology program will certify and license students with the State as professional psychologists.

Syracuse's College of Arts and Sciences offers a Ph.D. in School Psychology through the Department of Psychology. This is a 3-year program that prepares students for state certification and licensure while teaching them how to meet the needs of children in schools, hospitals and child-related settings. Coursework includes topics in developmental psychology, experimental design and statistics. Research is also stressed, as students will be expected to pair with a faculty member from the university's School Psychology department in order to form a research group.

Ball State University in Muncie, IN

School Highlight: This school offers nearly 180 areas of study.

At the doctoral level, students can earn a Ph.D. in School Psychology or an Ed.S. in School Psychology. The Ph.D. program includes in-class coursework, academic research, practica and internships, preparing students for licensure and practice in the future. Graduates can practice in schools as well as private practice, mental health facilities and medical institutions. The Ed.S. program is designed more specifically for school psychologists; the curriculum is based on the Indiana school psychology licensure requirements and the standards of the National Association of School Psychologists. A Master of Arts degree is also available in this field, but it does not fully meet the standards for licensure.

  • The school psychology program at the University of Kansas in Lawrence combines theoretical coursework with training in public school settings.
