The University of Washington (UW) ranked tied for 14th among all public schools, according to U.S. News & World Report in 2015. Its Department of Communications offers a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Communication and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Communication. Students in either degree program take coursework from seven integrated areas of study, including communication and culture, global communication, media organization, communication technology and society, rhetoric and cultural studies, social interaction and political communication.
The school also has a Master of Communication (M.C.), which is specifically for mid-career professionals working in areas of communication such as public relations journalism or mediation. The University of Miami (UM) ranked tied for 48th among all national universities in 2015, according to U.S. News & World Report. The school offers an M.A. in Communication Studies that provides an in-depth study of the human communication process. Coursework includes the social effects of mass communication, executive communication and interpersonal communication.
A Ph.D. in Communication is available for those who want to teach in a college or graduate school environment or do research. Students can specialize in areas such as intercultural communication, health communication, journalism and media.
