Ancient history graduate programs allow students to conduct original research while studying the ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean. While the graduate program at Yale University includes a master's degree in ancient history, the graduate track in this field is intended for students who ultimately pursue the Ph.D. degree. Stanford University awards only a Ph.D.; however, students can choose from among several areas of emphasis. Both of these are top-ranked schools in the field, according to U.S. News and World Report.
1. Stanford University in Stanford, CA

Stanford University, ranked #4 among history graduate programs, according to U.S. News and World Report for 2013, offers degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels through its Classics Department. One of the four concentrations available at the doctorate level is ancient history. Students enrolled in this program study the history of the Mediterranean, specifically ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman cultures, through a curriculum consisting of seminars, classical literature and inscriptions, skills classes and narrative history.
2. Yale University in New Haven, CT

Yale's University, tied for the #1 ranking in history along with three other schools by U.S. News and World Report for 2013, awards graduate students with a Master of Arts after the completion of seven classes within the department. Further, all Ph.D. students receive a Master of Philosophy before the completion of their dissertation. Students applying to the classics graduate program, however, are expected to carry on to the doctorate level. The overall goal of Yale's Department of Classics is to conduct original research of the life and times of ancient Greeks and Romans. Graduate students enrolled in the ancient history degree program have access to the Classics Library, Yale's coin and papyri collections and electronic databases for research purposes.
