Many schools offer online counseling degree programs at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels. Much of the coursework in these programs can be completed online, with students accessing video lectures and course materials as their schedules permit. Few programs, however, can be completed totally through distance learning due to required field experiences and on-campus residencies.

Most counseling positions call for at least a master's degree, but it's possible to work as a substance abuse counselor with training at the bachelor's level.
