Earning Your Oregon High School Diploma!

A high school diploma is often considered necessary for most employment and future educational goals. The state of Oregon offers some alternatives to the traditional high school system if you have not earned your diploma.

How to Earn Your High School Diploma in Oregon

If an adult did not earn their high school diploma, they may find they have issues obtaining employment or advancing their education. For adults who are in need of their high school diplomas, Oregon offers an adult high school diploma program.

Although these programs are run primarily through community colleges, you can find online options to pursue your high school diploma. Oregon also offers adult basic education (ABE) and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs for those who are not yet prepared for high school-level education.

Oregon High School Graduation Requirements

The state of Oregon requires 24 credits to be completed in order to earn a high school diploma. You will need to complete your credits in the following areas:

  • English - language arts
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social sciences
  • Health
  • Physical education
  • Second language/arts/career or technical education
  • Electives

Students can also demonstrate a comprehension level that meets or exceeds the necessary aptitude for credit in a particular subject area. You can do this either through classroom work or learning practices outside of a traditional classroom setting.

Adult High School Diploma

The Adult High School Diploma (AHSD) program is designed for adults that have some high school credits, but who need additional ones in order to complete their diploma. The program is generally open to adults 18 years or older, though most will also accept 16 and 17-year olds, some with additional requirements.

Exact requirements for entry into the program may depend on the specific community college or online school. Community colleges may also allow AHSD students to complete college-level courses while in the program.

The AHSD program, like that of a traditional high school, requires students to complete 24 credits (some of which are transferable from high school). The specific breakdown of credits may vary by institution. Additionally, students must prove proficiency in mathematics, reading and writing before graduation.

Adults can also take the GED test in Oregon to attain their high school diploma. In order to pass this exam, you must score 150 on each of the subtests and 600 when the tests are combined. Practice tests are not required, but recommended. You must be at least 18-years old to take this test.
