Essential Information

Training and courses for emergency room technicians are available at several technical and community colleges and are typically offered as part of certificate programs in emergency medical services. Enrolled students learn various aspects of the emergency-care industry. Many states require ERTs to be licensed and/or certified, much like emergency medical technicians (EMTs).

Emergency Room Technician Training

Training requirements for emergency room technicians vary by state. Most programs result in an occupational certificate. Some schools require students to have at least a high school diploma or GED prior to enrollment. Students typically complete a series of courses in emergency medical procedures and care that include clinical sessions and training as an emergency medical technician (EMT). ERT programs can generally be completed in less than two years.

A basic EMT course provides students with the knowledge to handle emergencies as a first responder in a rapid and accurate manner. Students learn to assess various patient traumas, identify phases of ambulance calls, practice emergency medical safety techniques and provide appropriate medical care and attention to patients before arrival at the hospital. They also learn to test patients for toxicology, allergy, urology, pulmonary or neurology complications. This required course is generally taken early in the program.

Identification of the signs of shock and appropriate treatments are also discussed. Students apply critical thinking skills and treatment methods in clinical emergency room situations under supervision.

EKG Readings Course

In this course, students learn how to read the results of electrocardiogram, or EKG, monitors. They gain hands-on training in non-invasive transcutaneous pacing, 12-lead interpretation and cardioversion procedures in order to assist medical staff in diagnosing heart problems, such as a myocardial infarction or myocardial ischemia. Lessons also focus on irregular waveforms and arrhythmia etiologies.

Lifting Methods Course

Instruction in the safe movement of patients onto gurneys and between hospital beds is provided in this course. Students demonstrate their knowledge of proper lifting methods to avoid causing back injuries or aggravating other conditions by practicing lifting techniques in class. Relevant factors relating to back injuries, such as body mechanics, cardiovascular conditioning and back strengthening exercises, are also explored.
