List of Common Courses
Furniture Repair Course
Furniture restoration and repair are the main focuses of this course. Students examine the processes of repairing veneers, exploring jigs and reconnecting furniture once it has been repaired. Other lessons include carving, joinery, the replacement of broken components and furniture refinishing.
Basic Upholstery Course
This class focuses on basic upholstery skills. All students taking this class should have prior knowledge of sewing machine operation, along with access to a sewing machine when not in the classroom. Students receive instruction in the use of the tools used in furniture upholstery.
Upholstery Techniques Course
In this class, students learn how to work with wooden furniture frames. Students will develop industrial cutting and sewing skills, and they learn to upholster furniture from the inside out. This class also introduces students to spring-up techniques and will help students develop the skills needed to create patterns and cut cloth. The goal of this program is help students work quickly without sacrificing quality.
Advanced Furniture Upholstery Course
This course emphasizes furniture frame assembly and proper cutting skills. Students learn how to use sewing machines and a variety of hand tools. They also learn to adhere to safety guidelines when working. Other topics covered in this class include seat construction and chair and sofa upholstery.
Upholstered Furniture Construction Course
Students study the construction of upholstered furniture in this class. They learn which textiles and fabrics are used in upholstery, as well as the proper vocabulary of the furniture upholstery industry. Students learn to describe the systems used in mass furniture production.
Finishing and Repair Course
In a finishing and repair course, students are instructed in the use of furniture stains, finishes, glazes and lacquers. They gain expertise in properly applying these materials, for the purpose of color matching, tinting or antiquing furniture pieces. Other lessons focus on furniture maintenance and the use of sprays and finishing equipment.
