Essential Information

Programs in IT engineering could prepare students to become support technicians, network administrators or computer systems administrators. The coursework at both levels covers IT concepts such as networking, programming and software engineering; some specializations may cover distributed systems, systems management, information management, and information security. For admission, a bachelor's program requires a high school diploma or equivalent, while the master's program requires an appropriate bachelor's degree. Previous computer-related coursework may also be required for admission to some programs.

Bachelor's Degree in IT Engineering

Bachelor's degree programs in IT engineering engage with the fundamentals of computer hardware and software, information technology theory and the practicalities of setting up and maintaining databases, networks and web applications. Students enhance their technical communication and project management skills though participation in a combination of academic courses, labs and projects. Some programs are designed to accommodate transfer students from computer science-related associate's degree programs. Courses in English, history, political science and the humanities might comprise the liberal arts component of a bachelor's degree program. In addition to computer courses, IT engineering programs may require math courses in calculus and probability modeling. Other courses students might take are:

  • Information engineering technology introduction
  • Computer science fundamentals
  • Information systems
  • Data structure applications
  • Systems design and planning
  • Local area networks

Master's Degree in IT Engineering

A master's degree program in IT engineering integrates concepts from systems engineering, software engineering and networking. Students learn about the process of designing, developing, implementing and managing systems. Although IT work experience isn't necessary, many master's programs are aimed at IT professionals at the beginning or mid-level of their careers. Foundation and elective courses along with a thesis or practicum make up the structure of master's programs. In practicum courses, students solve a problem in IT engineering to demonstrate mastery of the curriculum.

  • Software systems engineering
  • System project management
  • Information systems modeling
  • Software design
  • Software verification

Popular Career Options

A bachelor's degree prepares IT engineering graduates for positions within businesses, educational institutions and governmental and non-profit organizations. Possible job titles include:

  • Telecommunications systems specialist
  • Network administrator
  • Field support technician
  • Website administrator

Graduates of IT engineering master's degree programs are qualified for leadership positions in:

Employment Outlook and Salary Information

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov) projects 8% growth in employment of network and computer systems administrators over the 2014-2024 decade. Ongoing technological advances and security concerns surrounding the use of networks will drive demand for workers with the technical skills to manage them. Employment growth for database administrators is expected to be 11% over the same time period, with increasing security measures driving growth in this sector as well. As of May 2015, the BLS listed the median salary of network and computer systems administrators as $77,810 per year; for database administrators, it was $81,710.

Continuing Education Information

Bachelor's degree holders can improve their prospects for advancement to project leader and supervisory positions by earning a master's degree in IT engineering. Master's level programs are almost as widely available as bachelor's programs.

Internet technology (IT) engineering focuses on managing the hardware and software systems that make up the internet technology infrastructure of a company or organization. A 4-year bachelor's degree or 2-year master's degree are available options for those interested in a career in this field.
