There are many free online courses and learning materials available to students who wish to acquire German language skills. Lessons teach users German vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar using many different means, such as games, videos, audio files and interactive exercises. None of the providers of these courses and materials grant credit for their use.

Free Online German Courses and Lessons

The University of Texas at Austin

  • Deutsch im Blick ('in the German view' or 'German insight') is a program for students at the beginning or intermediate levels. The user learns German via real-life language situations. Lessons focus on vocabulary development and pronunciation through video interviews and audio components. The grammar components are integrated as links to a companion website, Grimm Grammar, which teaches basic grammar through fairy tale characters.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

  • German I will introduce students to the German culture and language. The focus is on grammar and vocabulary building. Materials include a textbook list, some class handouts in .pdf files, links to videos on YouTube and related links. The course does not include the audio files used to practice pronunciation in the original course.

Digital Dialects

  • German Language features games for German students at the beginner and lower-intermediate levels. Students can build vocabulary, practice conjugating verbs in the present tense and learn common verbs and words in categories that include colors, numbers, food and animals. Some vocabulary-building games are also available for more advanced students.

Deutsche Welle

  • Learn German courses on this site range from beginner to advanced and include videos, podcasts, worksheets and texts. The site has an audio tutor that helps users improve their pronunciation and expand their vocabularies. Although the site has beginner lessons, some knowledge of German is beneficial.

The University of Portsmouth

  • The Paul Joyce German Course is a 12-chapter, free online resource for complete beginners. Each chapter includes historical and cultural background, audio files of conversations and pronunciation guides, vocabulary lists, grammar lessons and exercises. The course website also includes a link to a comprehensive pronunciation guide, which is followed by pronunciation exercises.

Goethe-Institut

  • Practice German Online hosts German lessons at three levels that range from basic to demanding. Most of the lessons at the beginning levels, however, are completely in German and assume some prior knowledge. Tests at various levels are included in the materials. Students can participate in an interactive game online or through an app, in which beginning students solve a mystery in Germany. A free vocabulary-building app is also available.

The Open University

  • Rundblick: Beginners' German is a 5-hour introductory course in German taught through audio files, images and learning activities. It introduces learners to a variety of conversational situations in different German-speaking countries. Topics include countries where German is spoken, personal pronouns, numbers and ordering food.

The University of Iowa

  • The Sounds of Spoken Language was designed for linguistics and foreign language students, this website provides complete phonetic libraries for German, Spanish and American English. An animated diagram accompanies each consonant and vowel, showing how vocal anatomy moves to articulate each sound. Learners can discover how to produce the sounds by reading descriptions of each step. Through video and audio demonstrations, learners can also see real speakers making the sounds.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC)

  • Talk German: An Introduction to German offers videos, audio files and transcripts in these ten lessons help beginning students navigate everyday conversations while traveling. Lessons cover how to make introductions, get directions and order at restaurants, among other topics. Downloadable resources for instructors include worksheets.
