Online Course Requirements and Information

Free online MIS (management information systems) courses are offered at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Open University as part of the Open Courseware Consortium. These online MIS courses, along with the others listed below, are not given for credit and most have no prerequisites. They largely consist of lecture notes and readings. Information Technology as an Integrating Force in Manufacturing at MIT

This course places an emphasis on the importance of understanding information technology for business leaders. Using readings, lecture notes, slide presentations and study questions, current and potential business leaders learn how to use the Internet, relational databases and other information systems to achieve business goals. Current and future trends in technology and potential applications are explored.

Integrating eSystems and Global Information Systems at MIT

This course focuses on leveraging and integrating new information technologies to enhance business strategy and facilitate communication between business entities. There is a strong emphasis on interconnectivity and information sharing. Students study networks, data manipulation and how information technology and corporate strategy are linked to maximize performance.

Introduction to Algorithms at MIT

This class offers an introduction to coding and data manipulation, which are the basic building blocks of management information systems. The course is structured around seven modules, each one of which is a jumping off point for applying algorithms. The prerequisites are knowledge of Python programming and discrete mathematics. In addition to exams with solutions, students have access to six problem sets and 25 sets of lecture notes.

Introduction to Computer Science and Programming at MIT

Students will come out of this course knowing how to write simple programs using Python programming language. There is a strong focus on using computers for problem solving. Little or no background in computer science is needed. This course includes assignments, exams and video lectures.

Management Accounting and Control at MIT

Students also learn about various managerial styles and their effect on organizational performance.

Systems Thinking and Practice at Open University

Students learn how to take the conceptual analysis and application of information systems and depict them graphically. This facilitates the understanding and design of management information systems. Students will learn to diagnose problems and come up with system designs to address these problems.

Management of Libraries and Information Services at the University of Michigan

This online course helps students develop leadership and managerial skills needed to work in libraries and other industries requiring information services. Candidates can download the learning resources and view them at their own pace. Topics covered in this course include marketing, financial management, personnel management and function coordination.

Management Information System Class No. 1 at You Tube

This online course, offered by World Wide Science, located in Malaysia, is the first of several on the topic of information systems management. Students learn about e-commerce, databases, knowledge management and decision-making. Students completing an online MBA (Master of Business Administration) have used these videos.
