School Information

Explore two schools, ranked highly in the nation or in their region, that offer Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees related to network security. One institution is a private school with degree programs in information or computer security. 1. Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana

School Highlight: Student organizations include the Association of Multicultural Science Students and the Computer Science Women's Network.

U.S. News & World Report listed Purdue as the 62nd best national college in 2015 and ranked the school as having the 20th best computer science graduate program. The school offers a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Computer Science program with a concentration in security, which helps students learn about the impact of network security issues, how to design security software and how to test for network security breaches. Courses include cryptography, computer networks and software testing.

A Master of Science (M.S.) in Computer Science is also available through Purdue's information security center, called CERIAS. Classes include programming language, advanced security and cryptanalysis.

2. Rochester Institute of Technology in New York

Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is a private institution ranked the 8th best school in the North in 2015 by U.S. News & World Report, as well as much praise from The Princeton Review. RIT, located in the Rochester-area town of Henrietta, has a B.S. in Information Security and Forensics program where students learn how to identify concerns in computer network security systems. They also discover how to do forensic study of security breaches, including the identification, evaluation and recovery of data. Coursework involves cryptography and authentication, information security policies and computer malware.

The M.S. in Computing Security and Information Assurance program provides advanced study in network security. The program includes classes in secure database systems, ethics in technology and enterprise security.
