Essential Information

Students in an engineering master's program learn through business and engineering coursework, sometimes using simulated industrial systems to examine and solve problems. Some programs allow students to choose an area of concentration. Most programs can be completed in one year or less. Online, weekend and evening classes are common because many students also are employed full-time.

A four-year degree in engineering or related field is required for admission, often with a minimum number of mathematics credits. Applications may also require Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) scores.

Employment Outlook and Salary Information

Engineering managers are grouped with architectural managers by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), and slow growth of 2% is expected for these occupations over the 2014-2024 decade. Median earnings for architectural and engineering managers in 2015 were $132,800 annually.

Continuing Education

Graduates can advance their skills or experience through graduate certificate programs in systems engineering, technology management or information systems management. Graduates with a desire to perform research or teach at the university level can pursue a Ph.D. in Engineering Management. Ph.D. programs provide engineers with advanced research in design, management and systems through directed research projects and a dissertation.

The curriculum of an engineering management master's program is comprised of engineering and business courses, and students can often specialize in the field that interests them. These programs can prepare students for leadership roles or for enrollment in engineering management doctoral programs.
