Online associate's degree programs in robotics engineering are tough to find, but there are associate's degree programs in electronic or electrical engineering technology that can give graduates the skills they'll need to work in robotics. In these programs, students learn to understand and use basic principles of mathematics, science, engineering and electronics.

Through experiments and projects, they gain the practical knowledge to solve engineering problems and learn to read and understand technical documents. Associate's Degree Related to Robot Engineering

Although students typically can't earn an online associate's degree in robot engineering, they have options for related online study in electronics programs. Students who want to prepare for a career in robotics can earn an Associate of Science (A.S.) or an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Electronic Engineering Technology or Electrical Engineering Technology. These programs train students in the electrical circuitry, machine components and controls that are necessary for robotic engineering.

Information and Requirements

The associate's degree can be completed in 1-2 years. To accelerate the program, some schools allow students to simultaneously take as many classes as possible. Some programs train students for the Certified Electronics Technician (CET) exam. Programs often provide tools and equipment for at-home lab practice as part of tuition costs, but textbooks may need to be purchased separately.

Tests are administered online. Exams may need to be proctored at local sites. Some schools require computers that can operate Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office. Most communication with school support staff is done by e-mail.

Course Topics

Classes include information about power systems, circuitry, relays, microprocessor function and design, control systems and signal processing. Students take physical science and math courses useful to engineering, such as physics, algebra and pre-calculus. Some associate's programs require courses in general education, economics, social sciences and technical skills.

Electrical Systems and Tools

Students learn to identify and understand the components of electrical systems, such as logic relays, raceways, control devices, conductors and circuit protection. This class also considers how to use tools and select and integrate components based on project specifications.

Electric Motors

This course studies the related operations of generators and motors. Students examine the components and functions of both synchronous and inductive motors. Other class topics include solid-state drive systems, power sources and power converters.

Control Technology

Students study both electric and mechanical control systems. This course examines digital and analog controls, feedback loops and sensing technology. Class participants evaluate control systems for effectiveness and potential areas for improvement.


Career Information

According to PayScale.com, robot technicians had total annual pay between $28,952 and $58,776 in October 2016. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, electrical and electronics engineering technicians had an average annual wage of $61,870 as of May 2015. To pursue more advanced options in robotics, individuals can earn a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree through an on-campus robotic engineering program.

Since online associate's degree programs specifically in robotic engineering are rare, the subject can be studied in online electronic or electrical engineering technology associate's degree programs. Students learn how to identify and resolve engineering issues, and they will have to complete labs at home and be in attendance for proctored exams.
