Sonogram technicians work with ultrasound waves to take diagnostic images of patients instead of using x-rays. Because of the hands-on nature of this field, it is difficult to find distance learning options, but there are a few online training courses available. For instance, as part an associate's degree program in diagnostic medical sonography/vascular technology, several introductory courses may be offered online.

Alternatively, registered diagnostic sonographers who are employed in the field can find degree completion Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography programs available entirely online. These programs include both general education courses and career-specific classes in diagnostic medical sonography. In order to apply, prospective students must have OB/GYN and Abdomen certification from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). Credits from earning this designation can be applied to the degree. It is important to note that students are expected to complete practical clinical assignments, but they can be conducted at the student's current place of employment.
