Online Courses in Phlebotomy

The following descriptions detail the typical curriculum of some commonly offered online phlebotomy courses.

  • Phlebotomy Course: Clinical work is expected of phlebotomy students, so lab work for this course must be completed in person. With some programs, online study is available with on-campus lab work for the practicum. Online components teach the techniques in puncturing the vein and collecting blood samples for analysis and testing. Diagrams and videos are offered through some programs for a visual aide. Ethics, medical terminology, equipment and safety are covered.
  • People Skills Course:This course doubles as a psychology course for dealing with patients compassionately around with needles and blood. Safety protocols are covered, as are communication skills. Through online readings and discussion, students have the opportunity to hone skills for working in an environment that patients may find frightening or uncomfortable.
  • Phlebotomy Certification Preparation Course: With online practice and study, this course prepares students to take the exam for certification as a phlebotomy technician. By the end of the course, students have better knowledge of vial labeling, blood-taking techniques, office and communication skills, safety and anatomy. This course is designed for anyone taking a phlebotomy program or for those who need a refresher course prior to examination by the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
  • Pediatric Phlebotomy Course: This rare course offers information on working with children when taking blood. Special skills and techniques are taught to make taking blood quicker for children with small arms and delicate skin. Babies are a primary focus of this course as well. This course, if available, can be taken any time during a program.
  • General Psychology Course: This course is often a part of the curriculum to obtain a certificate. Given the importance of being able to understand patients, students often need to examine an overview of the scientific study of human behavior. This course often focuses on methodology, biopsychology, sensation, perception, learning, motivation, cognition, abnormal behavior, personality theory and social psychology.
  • Dermal Puncture and Capillary Blood Collection Course: In this course, phlebotomists learn about heelstick and fingerstick techniques that can be used to collect high-quality blood samples from patients. They are also familiarized with the types of tests that require capillary blood, such as those that are used to evaluate metabolic processes in newborns, and those that measure the amount of gas and lead in the blood of older children and adults.
  • Minimizing Pre-Analytical Variability Course: This course familiarizes phlebotomists with the precautions that must be taken prior to collecting blood or urine samples, in order to ensure the quality of the specimens. This is essential since doctors make important clinical decisions based on lab test results.

Program Information

Online phlebotomy courses can be taken with little or no on-campus study and are typically part of phlebotomy training programs that result in a certificate or diploma. Due to the extremely hands-on nature of the phlebotomy field, in-person clinical work is also part of these programs. Graduates can take an exam for certification as a phlebotomy technician with the International Academy of Phlebotomy Sciences.

Phlebotomy professionals can get the training they need for their careers and hone their skills by taking online phlebotomy courses.
