Essential Information

The general studies major is offered by schools as a route to an undergraduate degree for students who are returning to school after an absence or for the student who is pursuing a broad range of study. Because of the nature of the topics studied, this degree can be applicable across a variety of career fields. The general studies graduate may gain additional specialized knowledge in a career field by further pursuing a certificate award or moving on to graduate school for a master's or doctoral degree.

Career Options

A bachelor's degree in general studies allows the graduate to develop a personalized area of concentration; therefore, the graduate has virtually any career field open. Career options such as lodging manager, budget analyst and computer network support specialists require a bachelor's degree. Since a general studies degree award is often pursued by working adults, previous job experience may be utilized when seeking employment.

Lodging Manager

Lodging managers supervise every aspect of a hotel, motel or other type of overnight accommodation. Their duties may cover greeting guests, supervising staff, setting room rates and inspecting facilities. A high school diploma and experience may be sufficient for some jobs, but most larger hotels and chains prefer someone with a bachelor's degree.

In May 2013, the median salary for a lodging manager was $46,830, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). However, the BLS anticipated little to no job growth in this occupation over the next few years, primarily due to the decrease in full-service properties with many departments as well as streamlining the number of management positions as a whole.

Budget Analyst

Budget analysts monitor the financial situations of businesses and government entities. They need strong analytical skills, with training in statistics and accounting. A bachelor's degree may be acceptable for some jobs, but many employers will only consider someone with a master's degree.

In 2013, budget analysts earned a median salary of $70,110, according to the BLS. The BLS expected slower than average job growth of 6% in this field from 2012-22, but said prospects should be good for entry-level candidates due to steady turnover in the field.

Computer Network Support Specialist

Computer network support specialists support the computer system within an organization, helping to analyze, troubleshoot and repair information technology issues. They generally need a bachelor's degree.

The BLS forecast job growth of 7% from 2012-22 for computer network support specialists, with opportunities especially strong for those with expertise in cloud data storage. The median salary in May 2013 for computer network support specialists was $60,180, the BLS noted, with the highest salaries, nearly $93,000, going to those who worked in the oil and gas extraction industries.
