The Pratt Institute is a 4-year, private school with its main campus in Brooklyn, NY, approximately five miles from Jersey City. It enrolls nearly 5,000 students each year. Pratt Institute's School of Art and Design has numerous degree programs, such as art history, film, fashion design, photography, communications design, digital arts and fine arts. Undergraduate and graduate degree programs are available in graphic design, digital arts and communications design.

Students enrolled in the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Graphic Design and Illustration program take liberal arts courses and can transfer their credits into one the school's Bachelor of Fine Arts programs. In addition to general education requirements, students take courses in 3-D design, painting, drawing, photography, computer graphics and typography. In the Associate of Occupational Studies (A.O.S.) in Digital Design and Interactive Media program, students take many of the same courses as found in the AAS program, but this program is geared more toward preparing students for employment in the field rather than further studies.

Students in the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Digital Arts program with a concentration in 3-D animation and motion arts learn how current technology is used in forms of expression. Courses within this program cover character animation and design, motion dynamics, digital media audio and time-based narrative. The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Digital Arts with a concentration in 2-D animation program focuses more on animation production. Courses include experimental and stop motion animation, 2-D character animation, Flash for animation and the history of animation.

The Master of Fine Arts in Digital Animation and Motion Arts program contains courses in motion graphics, live action, character design and special effects. Students can also compare 2-D and 3-D animation and how they relate to narrative and non-narrative films. Students in the Master of Science in Communications Design program learn about time-based media and how it relates to graphic design. They utilize computer applications to complete coursework in subjects like digital design, typography, interactive design and visual communication. Students must also complete a thesis before they graduate.
