1. New York University in New York, NY

School Highlight: Bookkeeping certificate courses at New York University are offered on evenings and weekends for working professionals.

U.S. News & World Report ranked New York University 36th among all national universities in 2017, as well as ninth for its undergraduate accounting program. This private not-for-profit institution offers bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. programs in accounting through its Sterns School of Business, as well as a bookkeeper certificate through the School of Continuing and Professional Studies. The 4-course bookkeeping certificate program includes courses in beginning and advanced bookkeeping techniques, QuickBooks and payroll administration.

University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA

School Highlight: The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton's Accounting Department features research studies in capital markets, securities analysis and taxes.

The University of Pennsylvania is a private institution with an undergraduate business program that U.S. News & World Report ranked first in the nation for 2017, as well as 8th among national universities for the same year. The university's Wharton School of Business offers a bachelor's degree, master's degree and Ph.D. in Accounting. The curriculum incorporates principles from finance, economics, organizational research and business.

University of California - San Diego

School Highlight: The University of California offers an AIPB-endorsed Certified Bookkeeper program.

The University of California - San Diego (UCSD) was ranked tenth in the nation among best public schools in 2017, according to U.S. News & World Report. USCD offers a bookkeeping course that is endorsed by the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers (AIPB). The stand-alone program is offered through the extension school and is designed to prepare students for the exam to earn the Certified Bookkeeper credential. Students interested in becoming bookkeepers can also take this course as part of the accounting certificate program. UCSD's Rady School of Management also offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in accounting.

Brigham Young University in Provo, UT

School Highlight: The undergraduate accounting program ranked number three by U.S. News & World Report in 2017.

At Brigham Young University, students can earn a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Accountancy or a Master of Accountancy (MAcc). Although the BS program includes general education classes, students are required focus their coursework almost entirely on accounting during their junior year. After their junior year, students must complete an internship in the field between their junior and senior years. In the MAcc program, students take advanced courses in the field and develop skills in communication, collaboration and decision-making.
