School Overview

Aspiring fashion designers can enroll in formal education programs at the undergraduate or graduate level. These programs can be found within art institutes or four-year colleges and universities. The four notable schools profiled here include a renowned art and design college and fashion institute based in New York City's famous garment district. Each of the four schools offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design. In addition, a Master of Fine Arts program can be found at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Columbia College Chicago in Chicago, IL

School Highlight: The Fashion Studies Department offers multiple, distinct fashion programs to students.

Columbia College is a private, urban college that offers a BA and a BFA in Fashion Design. Available through the Fashion Studies Department, the fashion design program combines academic studies with hands-on experiences in design. Departmental facilities include a fashion lab equipped with sewing machines, cutting tables, dress forms, and ironing stations.

Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC

The fashion design program at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) has been around since 1944. Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, GA

The School of Fashion at the Savannah College of Art and Design offers a BFA as well as an MFA and MA in Fashion. Additionally, the annual fashion show, SCAD, provides students with the opportunity to show their work to famous designers and the media.

Columbus College of Art and Design

School highlight: Students receive hands-on experience in construction and design.

Columbus College of Art and Design offers a BFA program in fashion design. Students design styles, develop their sewing skills, and gain experience with industry standard software. They have access to six studios, including a sewing lab, a pattern and draping lab, a drawing lab, and a computer lab. In addition to design-specific courses, students also pursue more general liberal arts studies. The program culminates in a senior fashion show.
