Programs in networking and telecommunications are often offered through a school's engineering or computer science department, usually at the graduate level, though some undergraduate programs are available. These topics might also be covered within broader information systems programs. Relevant undergraduate and graduate programs in networking and telecommunications can be found at the University of Pittsburgh; graduate studies in this field are also available at Syracuse University, the University of Colorado, and Boston University. Each of these schools was selected for the national university rankings they received from U.S. News & World Report for 2017.

Syracuse University in NY

Syracuse University is a private institution ranked 60th among national universities by U.S. News & World Report in 2017. Syracuse was also one of The Princeton Review's best schools in the nation for the same year. The School of Information Studies offers a Master of Science in Telecommunications and Network Management. Students take a combination of core classes and electives, available both on campus and online, and complete a capstone class in their final year. Some of the core classes include topics in management principles, information policy, and information security. Students can also take electives in Java and Unix programming, social media, information architecture for Internet services, and risk management.

University of Colorado - Boulder

For 2017, U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Colorado - Boulder among the top 40 public schools in the nation, while The Princeton Review named it among the best 381 colleges overall. The Master of Science in Telecommunications is an interdisciplinary program through which students acquire technical skills and take classes in economics, policy, and business. They also complete two capstone courses, or alternatively, one capstone course and a master's thesis. The school also offers a Doctor of Philosophy for students interested in telecommunications research. Certificate programs are available in wireless networks and technologies, network architecture, and energy communication networks.

University of Pittsburgh in PA

The University of Pittsburgh was ranked as the 24th best public school in the country by U.S. News & World Report, as well as one of the best northeastern colleges by The Princeton Review for 2017. The program is highly interdisciplinary, combining studies in computer science, engineering, business, and law. The program also covers the implementation and maintenance of networks. Students in the program may pursue a security concentration or a dual degree in actuarial science or administrative studies.
