Schools Overview

Prospective archaeology graduate students can find both master's and doctoral degrees in the field. Some schools also offer dual degrees with other subjects. Three excellent universities for graduate-level studies in archaeology are Yale University, Columbia University, and Arizona State University. Each of these schools was nationally ranked by U.S. News & World Report for 2017. The archaeology graduate programs can prepare students for a range of cultural careers, not excluding education. Let's take an in-depth look at these schools.

Yale University in New Haven, CT

Yale is currently 3rd on the U.S. News & World Report 2017 list of best universities in the nation. Its master's program in archaeological studies is composed of eight courses and requires a graduate thesis. Students are given three years to finish this degree program. Yale's master's program prepares students for a variety of careers in education and cultural areas. The program also provides continuing education for archeologists and other professionals. Course credits are designed to be transferable to schools that offer Ph.D. programs in this field.

Columbia University in New York, NY

Columbia, ranked 5th on U.S. News & World Report's 2017 list of top national universities, offers Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs in archaeology through its Department of Anthropology and Department of Art History and Archaeology. For the first three years of their study, students take coursework and may work as teaching assistants for undergraduate courses. Columbia allows Ph.D. candidates to take courses at other institutions, such as Teacher's College or Princeton University, through the Inter-University Doctoral Consortium. After the third year, students receive their M.Phil. and are free to travel for their research. The final step of the Ph.D. program is a dissertation, which should take no more than seven years to complete.

Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ

Arizona State University was ranked the #1 most innovative school in the country by U.S. News & World Report for 2017. The school offers a Ph.D. in Anthropology with a concentration in archaeology. Students in this program undertake interdisciplinary research in the social and natural sciences. Field research takes place at sites around the world. ASU's regional strengths include Eastern North America, Southwestern United States, Mesoamerica, the Andes, and Western Eurasia. The school also has a particularly strong offering in topics such as food production, ancient urban societies, and socio-natural landscapes, among others. For 2017, the national ranking for Arizona State University was #129, per U.S. News & World Report.
