Schools Overview

Two of the most well-known American universities, Yale University and Columbia University, offer excellent archaeology programs at the graduate level. Both are located on the East Coast of the US and have been ranked by the U.S. News & World Report among the top five best universities in the nation. The archaeology graduate programs can prepare students for a range of cultural careers, not excluding education. Although Yale offers a master's degree program, Columbia University offers both master's and doctoral programs, which may be personalized in conjunction with other departments at the university.

1. Yale University in New Haven, CT

School Highlight: Yale University is third on the U.S. News & World Report 2015 list of the best universities in the nation.

Its master's program in archaeological studies is composed of eight courses and requires a graduate thesis. Students are given three years to finish this degree program. Yale's master's program prepares students for a variety of careers in education and cultural areas. The program also provides continuing education for archeologists and other professionals. Course credits are designed to be transferable to schools that offer Ph.D. programs in this field.

2. Columbia University in New York, NY

School Highlight: Columbia University is ranked fourth on U.S. News & World Report's 2015 list of top national universities.

Columbia offers Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy programs in archaeology through its Department of Anthropology and Department of Art History and Archaeology. For the first three years of their study, students take coursework and may work as teaching assistants for undergraduate courses. Columbia allows Ph.D. candidates to take courses at other institutions such as Teacher's College or Princeton University through the Inter-University Doctoral Consortium. After the third year, students receive their MPhil and are free to travel for their research. The final step of the Ph.D. program is a dissertation, which should take no more than seven years to complete.
