Arizona State University and Indiana University - Bloomington are among the top universities with graduate programs in exercise science. Although Indiana was ranked in the top 100 national universities by U.S. News & World Report and Arizona was not, Arizona ranked higher for kinesiology doctoral programs by a professional organization. Both schools offer master's and doctoral programs in the field.

ASU offers programs in exercise science at the master's and doctoral levels within the School of Nutrition and Health Promotion. Students of the Ph.D. in Physical Activity, Nutrition and Wellness program conduct research in exercise, nutrition and health promotion; they must also complete a dissertation. The college also offers a Master of Science in Clinical Exercise Physiology and a Master of Science in Exercise and Wellness program, which prepares students for employment in public health organizations or exercise and wellness programs. The MS in Exercise and Wellness also offers a concentration in health aging.

Indiana University (IU) - Bloomington's doctoral program in kinesiology was ranked seventh in AAKPE's doctoral program evaluation of 2004. IU's graduate programs in kinesiology are offered by the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. Those pursuing a high school or college coaching career should pick the applied sport science track of the master's degree program. The program also offers a fitness and wellness track as well as an athletic training track. Candidates in the Ph.D. in Kinesiology program can choose an area of focus in exercise physiology or adapted physical education.
