Career Information for the Best Careers with Flexible Schedules

Real Estate Sales Agents

Real estate sales agents work with their clients to help them buy, sell or rent various properties, which requires them to understand and be up to date on current market trends, property values and more. These agents must work with a real estate broker to promote and sell properties, negotiate between buyers and sellers and handle all of the official documents needed to exchange properties. Real estate sales agents typically work full-time and are able to set their own schedule, but many choose to hold irregular hours on evenings or weekends to meet with clients. They need a high school diploma and must pass a licensing exam.

Postsecondary Teachers

Depending on their institution, postsecondary teachers may have the option to create their own class schedules or even teach classes online at times that are best for them. They are responsible for creating the curriculum, assignments and assessments for various courses they teach in their area of expertise. Their institution may require them to oversee the work of graduate students, advise undergraduate students and/or conduct independent research in their field, most of which can still be done on a flexible schedule. Most institutions require these educators to hold a Ph.D. in their field, but some may only require a master's degree.

Fine Artists

Fine artists create beautiful pieces of artwork, such as paintings, sculptures, glasswork and more. They usually have free reign of their schedules while working on a project, unless a client needs a particular piece completed within a certain timeline. These artists document their work in professional portfolios, and carefully apply the techniques of their field to create pieces to sell or display. Fine artists typically have a bachelor's or master's degree in the field.

Writers and Authors

Like fine artists, writers and authors often have flexible schedules while working to create various kinds of written content, such as books, songs, advertisements, articles and more. Some projects may require meeting a specific deadline, but other projects, especially freelance projects or personal blog writing, offer very flexible schedules and possibly the chance to work from home. Writers and authors usually work with their clients and/or editors to finalize a piece prior to publication. Most writers and authors need a college degree and some experience.

Fitness Trainers and Aerobics Instructors

Fitness trainers and aerobics instructors may work in gyms and fitness centers on nights or weekends in addition to some daily hours, but some instructors, particularly personal trainers, may be able to set their own schedules. These trainers and instructors lead individuals and/or groups through various exercises and training programs to improve the client's overall health. Fitness trainers and aerobics instructors demonstrate the correct techniques for the activity, monitor a client's progress, enforce safety rules and provide emergency first aid if needed. After graduating from high school or earning a GED, these workers usually need certification, but requirements vary based on the employer.

Photographers

Similar to writers and authors or fine artists, photographers typically create their own schedules to capture images of various subjects with cameras. Fine arts photographers probably have the most flexible schedules as they photograph people, places, animals and more for art, but portrait photographers often work from their homes or own studios and are able to set their schedules. Most photographers use digital cameras, lighting techniques and photo-editing software to create beautiful images for their clients. Education requirements for these professionals range from no formal education to a bachelor's degree.
