Career Information for Future In-Demand Jobs

Physical Therapists

Physical therapists need a Doctor of Physical Therapy and a license. They help injured and sick patients manage pain and improve movement as part of preventative care, treatment and rehabilitation. As the population increases and ages, physical therapists will be in great demand in the future, adding a projected 71,800 jobs by 2024.

EMTs and Paramedics

Another in-demand career in the future is that of the EMT/paramedic; an increase in medical emergencies such as natural disasters, car accidents and violent crimes will mean a high demand for EMTs and paramedics. The BLS estimates that 58,500 jobs will be added to this field by 2024. Paramedics and EMTs respond to emergencies, provide medical care, and transport patients to hospitals. To become an EMT or paramedic, you need to complete a post-secondary training program and pass a licensing exam.

Wind Turbine Service Technicians

Clean energy jobs such as wind turbine service technicians will be in great demand in the future as we move from burning fossil fuels and pollutant-heavy energy sources toward more sustainable and cleaner energy sources, such as wind and solar energy. In fact, an estimated 4,800 jobs will be added to this field by 2024 (doubling the current employment level). These professionals, also known as windtechs, work outdoors repairing, servicing, and installing wind turbines. To become a windtech, you need training at a technical or vocational school and on-the-job training.

Cartographers and Photogrammetrists

Another occupation that will be in great demand in the future is cartographer or photogrammetrist. This field is projected to add 3,600 jobs by 2024, as governments and businesses increase their use of maps and charts for planning purposes. These professionals update and create charts and maps by gathering and analyzing data about the earth's surface and other geographic information. To become a cartographer or photogrammetrist you need a bachelor's degree in surveying, geographic information systems, cartography, or geography and on-the-job training.

Computer and Information Systems Managers

With the advent of new, better and faster technological tools in the future, computer and information systems managers who can plan, assess, and implement organizations' computer systems will be in great demand. These professionals, also called IT managers, oversee organizations' hardware and software tools, evaluate new technology, and strategize how to best use new tools as they become available. To become an IT manager, you need at least a bachelor's degree in computer science or information science and work experience; some jobs require graduate training. By 2024, the field is expected to add 53,700 jobs.

Computer Systems Analysts

Systems analysts will also be in great demand in the future, as organizations adopt and adapt to new, more powerful technological tools. There will be an estimated 118,600 new jobs added to this field by 2024. Systems analysts evaluate organizations' current computer systems and operations, and advise companies how they can become more efficient by implementing new technological tools and procedures. To become a systems analyst, many people earn a bachelor's degree in computer or information science; some people with a liberal arts degree, programming and/or business skills may also land jobs in this field.

Registered Nurses

With our aging population and longer life expectancy, registered nurses will be in great demand in the future. In fact, by 2024 the BLS projects 439,300 new RN jobs. RNs care for patients, teach patients and the public about health-related issues, and provide support to families and patients in clinics, doctor's offices, hospitals, schools, and correctional facilities. To become an RN you must earn an associate or bachelor's degree in nursing, or complete a diploma program in nursing; all RNs must also pass a licensure exam.
