Master's in Kinesiology Degree Programs in Chicago

University of Illinois at Chicago

The University of Illinois at Chicago provides graduate students with a Master of Science in Kinesiology program that has a thesis and non-thesis options. Students who pursue the thesis option must complete 27 credit hours of courses and 5 credit hours of research for their thesis or final project, while the non-thesis option requires 40 credit hours of coursework. Students in both options must take a course in Evidence-Based Practice in Kinesiology and Nutrition, and then choose from courses in their selected concentration of exercise physiology; psychology and promotion of exercise, health, and sport behavior; or biomechanics. Students wishing to apply to the master's degree program need a bachelor's degree with a 3.0 GPA, qualifying GRE scores, three letters of recommendation and a personal statement.

Northeastern Illinois University

Northeastern Illinois University offers a unique Master of Science in Exercise Science program that only offers classes at night, which makes it a great option for graduate students with full-time employment. The program is divided into introductory courses, foundation courses and applied courses that cover topics in exercise, sport and nutrition and then apply these concepts in a clinical setting. The program totals 36 credits, with 30 credits being in core classes. Then, students can choose from a 6-credit thesis option, two 3-credit elective courses, or a 3-credit internship and one 3-credit elective course. Applicants to the program need to hold a bachelor's degree and a grade of a B or better in biology, psychology, exercise physiology, chemistry and human anatomy, as well as submit two letters of recommendation.

Concordia University Chicago

Concordia University Chicago offers a fully online Master of Science in Applied Exercise Science program with a human movement science concentration. The program totals 30 credits consisting of 8-week long courses, and follows a cohort model of about 12 to 18 students. The program is designed to give students the necessary knowledge to work with injury prevention and pursue the National Academy of Sports Medicine's Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) credential after graduation. Students applying to the program need a 2.85 GPA or higher and must submit transcripts, two letters of recommendation and an objective statement.

The University of Illinois at Chicago offers a Master of Science in Kinesiology degree, while a couple of other schools in the Chicago area offer master's programs in closely related fields.
