Career Information for Introverts Pursing a Medical Profession

Surgical Technologists

An associate's degree or certificate is required to become a surgical technologist. Surgical technologists work in operating rooms. They prepare for surgeries by sterilizing operating rooms and equipment, and they make sure that there are enough medical supplies on hand. This part of their work is often solitary and may appeal to introverts interested in a medical career. Surgical technologists also assist surgeons and pass them equipment during the medical procedure.

Medical and Clinical Laboratory Technologists and Technicians

Medical and clinical laboratory technologists and technicians are responsible for performing tests on samples of things such as tissue or blood. Their work focuses on analyzing and testing the samples, documenting the results and updating data to the patients' medical files. Since much of their work involves using equipment to perform these tests and observing and documenting their work, this is a career field that may appeal to introverts because it is solitary. A certificate or associate's degree is sufficient for a career as a medical and clinical laboratory technician, but technologists are required to have a bachelor's degree.

Medical Records and Health Information Technicians

A certificate or associate's degree is required to become a medical records and health information technician. Introverts may be drawn to this type of medical career because medical records and health information technicians spend most of their time looking over patient records, ensuring records are accurate, developing databases, storing data and classifying records. This is an administrative medical career field that does not involve a lot of social interaction.

Medical Transcriptionists

Medical transcriptionists produce typed accounts of recorded data. Medical transcriptionists need to be familiar with medical terms so that they can accurately transcribe data that's generated by healthcare workers. These medical professionals spend much of their time working independently as they listen to recordings and produce typed records of the recordings. Introverts will appreciate the independent nature of the work medical transcriptionists do. A certificate, diploma or associate's degree can prepare individuals to become a medical transcriptionist.

Nuclear Medicine Technologists

Nuclear medicine technologists need to complete an associate's degree in nuclear medicine technology. They use special equipment to produce images of patients. Introverts will enjoy the fact that this career has limited opportunities for social interaction. Duties such as maintaining and examining equipment, producing medical records and disposing of radiation are solitary, and may appeal to introverts seeking a medical career.

Occupational Health and Safety Specialists

Occupational health and safety specialists perform inspections and assessments to make sure that workplaces follow safety regulations. They need a bachelor's degree. In addition to performing inspections and tests they also supervise occupational health and safety technicians and may also lead training programs. Introverts will appreciate the fact that a lot of the tasks occupational health and safety specialists perform involves working alone, or in a small group, to assess the environment, equipment and protocols in place.

Occupational Health and Safety Technicians

Occupational health and safety technicians help ensure that workplaces are safe. They perform inspections, gather samples, review procedures and investigate issues. Much of their work is solitary, which introverts prefer, and their work involves attention to detail and analysis. Individuals can prepare for this career by taking a certificate or associate's degree program, or by learning through practical training from their employer.

Orthotists and Prosthetists

Orthotists and prosthetists make medical equipment for patients. This includes braces and artificial limbs. They are highly trained, and need to earn a master's degree, finish a residency and earn certification. Introverts will find this career appealing because orthotists and prosthetists spend a lot of time on their own designing the medical equipment they create, and updating their patients' medical files. Other tasks they perform include explaining to patients how to use and maintain the equipment.

Radiologists and MRI Technologists

An associate's degree or postsecondary certificate is required to become a radiologist or MRI technologist. These professionals usually need to be certified or licensed as well. These professionals are trained to operate x ray or MRI equipment and produce images of a patient's body. This is a good medical career option for introverts because radiologists and MRI technologists spend a good deal of time caring for the equipment they use and producing records.
