Florida Military-Friendly Schools
Military-friendly schools in Florida all offer online learning, which can help those who need flexibility in their learning or may be deployed. In addition, many of these schools offer programs specifically to veterans and military members that help them fit into college life and successfully complete their education. Many of these programs involve other staff and faculty members at the school to help with the transition of new students who are or were previously involved in the military.
The Office of Military Services at Bethune-Cookman University offers services to active military members and veterans to assist with the transition from military life to college life. Tuition for active duty members is $250 per credit hour. This university also assists veterans with filing claims, deferring tuition and fees, and understanding other military benefits. Bethune-Cookman University has bachelor's and master's degree programs. Some of the programs offered include business, communication, education, engineering, and health professions. The university also offers some programs online. Bethune-Cookman University is located in a small city and has almost 4,000 students.
Florida State University
Florida State University (FSU) offers a Strategies for Veteran Success course for free to assist military students. The course provides important information and helps military students on their educational journey. FSU offers several military-related programs, including a Veterans Student Union in which vets can participate in student government, an Entrepreneurship Boot Camp to provide veterans with disabilities training to work in business, and a Student Veterans Center which provides resources and information for veterans. In addition, they also have veteran liaisons to assist students academically and an Veteran Alumni Society for past and active military members who have graduated from FSU.
There are several scholarships offered to veterans at Florida State University including the Emeritus Society Student Veteran Academic Excellence Scholarship, which is given to the student-veteran with the highest GPA at the end of each semester. Another scholarship is the Charles T. Haworth Graduate Scholarship for Veterans for vets who have been accepted into a master's program at FSU College of Social Sciences and Public Policy. Florida State University has online programs available to students. They offer associate's through doctoral degree programs. The school is large with over 41,000 students.
Jacksonville University offers a Green Zone program to help staff and faculty better understand and assist veterans. The school has a Veteran Student Coordinator that helps students transition into college life after the military through various services including counseling, advising, tutoring, and other veteran programs. In addition, the university offers career services. Jacksonville University has over 4,000 students and is located in a large city. The university has a variety of programs available, ranging from bachelor's to doctoral programs, with some available fully online.
Saint Leo University
Saint Leo University offers traditional, flexible, and online learning through which even a deployed military member has access to their courses; some even can be completed using a CD-ROM for those where internet access is unavailable. This university also offers the VetSuccess program, which helps students transition to campus life and learn more about different career options available to them after graduation. Saint Leo University also offers satellite learning centers that are located mostly on military bases or community colleges to allow for flexible learning. Saint Leo University is located in a small town, but has almost 15,000 students in attendance. They also offer many degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels giving a range of options for students.
University of West Florida
The University of West Florida has a Military and Veterans Resource Center to assist military members and veterans in their transition to college life through a variety of resources including career services, VetSuccess program, and writing assistance. At the school, students can participate in the Veterans Florida Entrepreneurship Program, which offers entrepreneurial training to military members to transition back into civilian life. The University of West Florida awards the Brigadier General and Mrs. Michael L. Ferguson Scholarship to veterans who are enrolled in College of Business courses. The university offers online courses that can be completed when students are deployed. University of West Florida is located in a small city and has about 13,000 students. The university offers many different educational programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
