Why Does A Clinical Psychologist Need These Qualities?

Are you innately curious?

Having an innate curiosity about others will help a psychologist to ask the right questions and to continue looking for more information from a patient.

Are you an active listener?

Active listening is essential both for helping the psychologist to better understand the patient, and for the patient to feel valued and cared for.

Are you passionate about psychology?

A clinical psychologist should be constantly acquiring new knowledge in the field of psychology in order to stay up to date and better help their patients.

Are you good at not taking things personally?

Those who come to a psychologist's office may lash out or attempt to manipulate the therapist in order to escape dealing with their own feelings. It's important that the psychologist recognizes these behaviors and doesn't allow this to lessen their care for the patient.

Can you remain unbiased and non-judgmental?

Remaining an objective and unbiased party with patients will help to give sound and rational advice and diagnosis.

Can you readily spot behavioral patterns?

Psychologists should be highly observant and note patterns in patients' behaviors and attitudes to better grasp patient needs.

Do you have a strong sense of empathy?

Being able to empathize with a patient will help build a sense of trust, and will also create a compassionate and more comfortable environment.

Are you a versatile communicator?

A psychologist must be a strong written and verbal communicator, but must also be able to adapt to new communicative styles based on what is most effective at getting through to different patients.

Are you highly self-aware?

Good psychologists are aware of their own issues and triggers, and will seek out the help they need, in order to best serve patients and protect themselves.

Do you work well with others?

Clinical psychologists need to be approachable and have strong interpersonal skills to develop a rapport with their clients and build strong patient-doctor relationships.

Do you prioritize confidentiality?

In order to maintain patient trust, a psychologist should make confidentiality a top priority unless the situation is emergent or dangerous.
