Audio Engineering Programs

A certificate program in audio engineering allows students to develop technical skills in producing high quality sound recordings. Once enrolled, students learn to use audio technology, including recording consoles, Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) systems, microphones, and the widely used audio software program Pro Tools. These programs mix lecture-based courses with hands-on studio training. Graduates may pursue a voluntary certification in audio engineering, which may help demonstrate their engineering knowledge. Prerequisites typically include a high school diploma or GED. Some programs may look for students with high school experience in audio work.

Audio engineers work in music, television, film, video games, and other industries, managing sound production and technology. Broadcasting and sound engineering technicians held about 117,200 jobs in 2014, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Overall, employment opportunities for broadcast and sound engineering technicians were expected to increase 7%, or as fast as average, between 2014 and 2024, as reported by the BLS.

During the same ten-year period, the BLS projected an 8% increase in jobs for sound engineering technicians and a 12% increase for audio and video equipment technicians.

As of May 2015, median annual wages for audio engineers varied by position, with audio and video equipment technicians earning $41,440, broadcast technicians earning $37,490 and sound engineering technicians earning $53,330.

Continuing Education

Certification is not required to work as an audio engineer. However, some broadcast engineers pursue certification through the Society of Broadcast Engineers in order to seek advancement. The Certified Audio Engineer (CEA) credential is a possibility for those who have five years of experience and who achieve a passing score on an exam. In some instances, education can count as experience, so an audio engineer with an associate degree might already have two years toward the 5-year requirement.
