Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology
Boston's Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology is a private, not-for-profit 2-year college with nearly 500 students working toward certificates and associate's and bachelor's degrees. This school offers a certificate of proficiency, an Associate of Science and a Bachelor of Science degree in automotive technology. Upon completion of these programs, students are encouraged to take ASE and NATEF certification exams.
Automotive Technology Certificate of Proficiency
This certificate program covers the operation and maintenance of transmissions and electrical systems, and it gives students hands-on experience in diagnosis and repair of vehicles in the student laboratory. Students learn how to solve problems that could affect a vehicle's performance, as well as study systems related to air conditioning and heating. The 32-credit hour certificate is designed for completion in 16 months.
Associate of Science in Automotive Technology
Students in this 2-year program work with various car dealerships as they learn customer service techniques for automotive businesses. Topics of study include operations and maintenance of vehicle systems, including transmission, brakes, electronics and air conditioning. Pupils spend two terms in the automotive laboratory diagnosing and repairing problems.
Bachelor of Science in Automotive Technology
Entrance into this program requires an associate's degree from BFIT or another accredited school. This program includes training in vehicle appraisal and vehicle parts and accessory marketing. Students learn business practices and legal requirements from OSHA in two required courses. In a computer-focused course, students learn to use spreadsheets, databases and office management techniques to keep an automotive business running smoothly. Engine performance, enhanced emissions and drivability courses provide training in testing computer-controlled engine systems and chassis testing, exhaust analysis and diagnosis of problems.
Quinsigamond Community College
Quinsigamond Community College is a 2-year, public institution accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). The automotive technology programs at this college were designed by Ford Motor Company to prepare students for work in Ford and Lincoln dealerships.
Certificate in Maintenance and Light Repair
This 2-semester certificate provides training in a variety of vehicle systems, from brakes and electrical systems to climate control systems. Students learn dealership car maintenance, inspections prior to delivery to customers and the tools used in auto shops. This certificate is 23 credit hours. Completion of these courses may count toward the Associate of Science in Automotive Technology program.
Associate of Science in Automotive Technology
The Associate of Science degree can build on information gained in the certificate program, for those who move from one program to another. Students learn how gas engines operate and how to test and analyze those engines. Further study includes vehicle suspension systems, the parts of the drive train system and the electronics. Individuals can complete one semester of on-the-job experience. Courses in speech, English and business are also required.
