Essential Information

While automotive training is offered throughout Indiana, most of the programs are available at 2-year Ivy Tech Community College, which has campuses all over the state. Depending on the Ivy Tech campus, students can pursue certificate programs in various industry-specific fields of study, as well as technical certificate and associate's degree programs in automotive technology with a variety of concentrations. Students may be expected to complete laboratory work as well as capstone projects.

Seven Ivy Tech campuses are profiled below, as well as an additional 4-year university offering an associate's degree program. In addition to preparing graduates for employment in the field, automotive programs also qualify them to earn certification through the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Ivy Tech Community College - Central Indiana

Ivy Tech - Central Indiana is located in Indianapolis, and students at the college can pursue numerous programs that will prepare them for careers as auto mechanics. Students can develop specific mechanic skills through certificate programs in automotive electrical/electronics, brakes and suspension, engine performance, electric and hybrid vehicle, and power train.

Students can also earn a technical certificate or Associate of Applied Science in Automotive Technology. The former requires completion of 31 credit hours, while the latter requires 67 credit hours. Aspiring auto mechanics can pursue a specialization in automotive service. The associate degree program includes general education course requirements. Students also have the option of earning technical certificates or degrees while participating in the Toyota T-Ten or GM ASEP programs. In addition to the classroom work in these latter two programs, students have the opportunity to work and gain specific training in Toyota or GM dealerships.

Ivy Tech Community College - East Central

Ivy Tech Community College - East Central is based in Muncie and offers automotive technology technical certificate and associate degree programs, each with an emphasis in automotive service. The 31-credit certificate program includes courses such as engine performance and design, braking systems, climate control systems, and service shop operations. The 70-73-credit associate degree program adds general education classes in public speaking, English composition, math, and humanities.

Ivy Tech Community College - Lafayette

This Ivy Tech campus in Lafayette offers automotive training at the certificate and associate degree levels. Earning general certificates requires completing 18-24 credits; certificates can be earned in power train, engine performance, electric and hybrid vehicle technologies, and automotive electrical/electronics.

The college offers technical certificate and associate degree programs in automotive technology with an emphasis in automotive service. This location also offers an accelerated program through the school's Ivy Institute of Technology.

Located in Gary, Ivy Tech Community College - Northwest offers an automotive technology associate degree. Students in this program are required to take courses in engine principles and performance, braking systems, climate control systems, and service shop operations. Prospective auto mechanics at the Southwest Ivy Tech campus in Evansville can earn certificates in automotive electrical/electronics, brakes and suspension, engine performance, and power train. The automotive technical certificate program is available in automotive service. Finally, the AAS program in automotive technology includes automotive service and dealer co-op concentrations. The latter includes the opportunity to work in auto dealerships or car service shops.

Ivy Tech Community College - Wabash Valley

Ivy Tech Community College - Wabash Valley, located in Terre Haute, features certificate programs in brakes and suspension, engine performance, power train, and automotive electrical/electronics. Automotive technology technical certificate and associate degree programs are offered in auto body repair, auto service, alternative fuel technician, and dealer co-op.

This location also has the Automotive Institute, where students prepare for industry certification. During this 40-week program, students can earn certificates or technical certificates, and apply credits from these programs toward an associate's degree program.

Vincennes University

This university in Vincennes offers a two-year Associate in Science (AS) program in automotive technology. Students earn 75-76 credits. Courses combine lectures with lab work, and students learn about alternative fuel vehicles, automotive chassis systems, automotive electronics, engine performance, drive trains, and transportation HVAC. Students also must complete a capstone project.
