Students in Kentucky have numerous options for pursuing auto mechanic training through diploma and associate degree programs. Several colleges in the state also offer automotive mechanic certificates that provide students with training in specific areas of the field, like transmission, electrical or engine repair.

Career Requirements

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, many employers require mechanics to earn National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification (www.bls.gov). Graduates of the auto mechanic training programs listed below are eligible for ASE certification.


Ashland Community and Technical College

Located in Ashland, students at Ashland Community and Technical College can pursue automotive mechanic programs at the certificate, diploma and associate degree levels. The diploma is 61-64 credits, and the associate degree is 73 credits. Courses cover topics in engine repair, fuel and ignition systems, electrical and brake systems, emission systems and climate control.

The college offers certificates in automotive air conditioning mechanic, automotive electrician, manual transmission/drive train technician, automotive transmission/transaxle technician, brake repairer, engine repairer, front end mechanic and tune-up mechanic.

Big Sandy Community and Technical College

Big Sandy Community and Technical College is based in Prestonsburg and has an automotive technology associate degree program. The program can be completed in four semesters and prepares students for employment with dealerships, parts stores and repair shops. Students must complete 11 automotive courses.

Bluegrass Community and Technical College

Bluegrass Community and Technical College is located in Lexington and offers a diploma and associate degree program in automotive technology. Students in both programs are required to complete automotive courses in engine repair, fuel and ignition systems, brake systems, automotive transmissions, heating and air conditioning, emissions systems and cooperative education.

Students can also pursue automotive certificates that range from 4-25 credits. These programs are offered in the same eight areas that Ashland Community and Technical College offers. These eight specializations are available at most of the community and technical colleges in the state.

Based in Elizabethtown, this community and technical colleges offers students certificates, a diploma or an associate degree in automotive technology. In addition to academic courses, students receive hands-on training at the on-campus automotive shop and learn to service trucks, hybrid vehicles and cars. Certificates at the college are available in the eight specialized areas mentioned above.

Jefferson Community and Technical College

Jefferson Community and Technical College is located in Louisville and offers automotive technology diploma and associate degree programs. Both programs offer an automotive technician specialization and automotive parts/service writer specialization. Automotive technician courses cover topics in automotive electricity, electrical systems, emission systems, brake and electrical systems, climate control and engine repair. Students in the automotive parts/service writer option learn about quality management, industrial safety, business and accounting.

In addition to the diploma and degree programs, students can pursue seven specialized certificates in areas such as engine repairer, tune-up mechanic and automotive electrician.

Owensboro Community and Technical College is based in Owensboro and has an automotive technician diploma along with several certificates in the field. The diploma requires 67 credits and features courses in engine repair, automatic transmission, emission systems, electrical systems, climate control and brake systems. Students also must participate in a co-op/practicum.

Students at Owensboro also have the option of pursuing certificates in the eight areas previously mentioned; additionally, the school offers certificates in preventative maintenance mechanic and undercarriage mechanic.

Based in Somerset, Somerset Community College offers automotive programs at the certificate, diploma and associate degree levels. Students are required to complete a practicum in addition to courses and labs in brake systems, suspension and steering, manual transmission, emission and electrical systems, engine repair and climate control.

The diploma and associate degree programs provide students with the technical and computer skills to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair vehicles. In addition to working for dealerships and repair shops, graduates could also start their own businesses.
