Ayurveda Schools and Universities in the U.S.

Ayurveda is a holistic, natural form of medicine popularized in India. It makes use of massage, yoga, certain ancient philosophies and herbs to heal the human body.

How to Select an Ayurveda School

Ayurveda is often offered as a single course or a series of courses within holistic medicine schools and other colleges. The student wanting to take a course or series of courses in Ayurveda may find a school which offers certifications in activities like yoga and lifestyle consulting. Though most schools offering Ayurveda-specific programs aren't accredited, those pursuing this course of study may want to check school websites for background information on the Indian study. A school may demonstrate credibility if it can explain what Ayurveda is and how its curriculum teaches it.

Holistic medicine schools - some of which are accredited by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education - may cover Ayurveda topics within their complementary and alternative medicine degree programs. These programs may focus on a variety of holistic remedies with Ayurveda as part of the curriculum. Students may learn lifestyle tips for longevity and energy, effective skills for working one-on-one with clients and stress management techniques.

If feasible, students may want to consider schools that offer Ayurveda as part of study-abroad programs. These students will have the chance to learn Ayurveda from spiritual Indian and Tibetan leaders. If a school offers Ayurveda as a study abroad program, its website will likely make a point of this.
