In New Jersey, there are various private hair academies and beauty schools that offer studies in barbering through cosmetology programs. Most courses require students to complete 1,200 hours of training. Students in these programs participate in instructional labs to learn hair styling, cutting and coloring techniques. Toward the end of many programs, students are able to gain valuable hands-on experience with customers by working in their school's salon.
Many schools in New Jersey offer cosmetology programs that are suitable for barbering education, and some of these are listed below.
Artistic Academy of Hair Design
The hair styling and cosmetology program at Artistic Academy of Hair Design in Morris Plains is 1,200 hours. During the first half of the program, students spend time working on mannequins and attending demonstrations and lectures. After passing the necessary examinations, students move onto the last half of the program which is made up of lectures and working and managing the school's salon. This allows students to receive experience working with real clients.
Atlantic Beauty & Spa Academy LLC
The Atlantic Beauty and Spa Academy, also known as the Shore Barbering School, is located in Egg Harbor Township and offers a cosmetology and hair styling program. For the first 600 hours of the program, students are considered to have junior status while in the last 600 hours of the program students have senior status. The first half of the program is spent acquiring the skills necessary to be a successful barber while the second half of the program is an opportunity to use those acquired skills on salon customers. In addition to regular instructors in the program, students have the benefit of meeting with guest artists who come to the school.
Capri Institute of Hair Design
The Capri Institute of Hair Design can be found in Clifton, although the school has additional campuses in Kenilworth, Brick and Paramus. The Clifton campus was originally founded in 1961 which means that the school has been around for over 50 years. In addition, the school is considered to be a Wella Professionals Premiere School. The entire cosmetology program takes 1,200 hours to complete.
Empire Beauty School
In addition to the location in Cherry Hill, the Empire Beauty School has schools in Paramus, Clementon and Bordentown. Hair coloring, hair texturing, hair cutting, hair styling and hair cleansing are all topics students study in this program. Beyond that, students also get experience with makeup and basic skin care. On the business side of things, retail training is another aspect students are required to learn about in this school's program.
The Hair Design School
Along with a Bloomfield location, the Hair Design School can be found in the following cities: Jersey City, Union and Ashbury Park. After a few classes in this school's cosmetology program, students are brought into the student salon. There, students can begin to work and interact with clients. In the retail training portion of the program, students are educated on how to inventory products and run a salon.
The Lab is a Paul Mitchell Partner School and it is found in the area of Ewing. This school's cosmetology program is divided into three areas: core, adaptive and creative. In the core part of the program, students work on their cosmetology foundational skills. Once in the adaptive portion of the program, students begin to build upon those initial skills while in the final creative aspect of the program, students begin to tackle advanced cosmetology techniques like chemical work.
P B Cosmetology Education Center
The 1,200 hour cosmetology program in Gloucester at the P B Cosmetology Education Center has part-time and full-time options. The part-time option requires students to attend classes for 75 weeks while the full-time program is only 40 weeks. The class sizes here are limited to 25 students. However, new courses occur at the start of each month. In addition to the standard cosmetology curriculum, students here can learn about client relations and self-marketing.
Parisian Beauty School
Located in Hackensack, students can find the Parisian Beauty School which is a Paul Mitchell Partner School. Students can find evening and daytime class options at this school for their cosmetology program. Students in the program are required to purchase several educational books in addition to other crucial equipment like interactive CDs and DVDs. In the last few weeks of the programs, students typically concentrate on getting themselves ready to enter into the workforce after graduation.
Rizzieri Aveda School for Beauty and Wellness
Students in the area of Voorhees can pursue a cosmetology program at the Rizzieri Aveda School for Beauty and Wellness. Waxing, nail care, skin care, makeup application and hair care are all studied in the first half of the program. Students also are educated on resume writing and interviewing. Once in the latter half of the program, students can put their acquired skills to the test on real clients at the school's salon.
Robert Fiance Beauty Schools
The Robert Fiance Beauty School can be found in West New York in addition to campuses in North Plainfield, Pitman and Perth Amboy. Once enrolled in the program, students can begin to learn about waving, tinting, bleaching, thermal hair styling, shampooing and scalp treatments. In addition to these necessary cosmetology skills, students also take the time to learn the regulations and state laws involving cosmetology work. The history of barbering as well as infection control and decontamination are other topics in this program's curriculum.
New Jersey barbers have to be licensed through the state. This licensure requires completing a beauty culture services class of at least 500 hours. From there, a licensing exam has to be taken and passed by the applicant.
