Basic Electronics Course and Class Descriptions

The study of basic electronics technology teaches students how to diagnose, repair, design and create electronics components. Through classroom study and hands-on experience, students prepare for work with lasers, fiber optics, robotics and computer technology.

Essential Information

Students interested in taking courses in basic electronics may enroll in an applied associate degree or certificate program in electronics technology. These programs are typically offered at technical or community colleges. Voluntary industry certifications are also available through organizations such as the Electronics Technicians Association International and the International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians. Degree and certificate programs in this field can prepare students to pass these certification exams.

Basic Electronics

This introductory course is part of both degree and certificate programs and teaches students the basics to electronic technology. Students experiment with direct current and series-parallel circuits, fiber optic components and oscillators. Study of Ohm's law, Watt's law and superposition theory is covered. This course is best taken at the beginning of an electronics technology program.

Microprocessor Course

Through study, demonstrations and a hands-on approach, students develop an understanding of microprocessor design in personal and microcomputers. Students examine the structure, static memories, circuit design and language programming of microprocessors. Troubleshooting of simple microprocessor problems may be covered.

DC and AC Circuits Course

This course is sometimes broken into two separate courses depending on the program. Students study resistors, vocabulary, capacitors, inductors, voltage and harmonics of direct circuits and amplitude circuits. Through the design, creation and testing of these circuits, students learn laboratory procedures, troubleshooting techniques, safety and tools.

Electronic Mathematics Course

Students studying basic electronics need experience with math courses, such as geometry, physics and algebra. Students learn how to use scientific calculators and formulas that help with figuring out voltage, distribution and other circuit formulas.

Electricity Course

In the electricity course, students learn the fundamentals and principles of the use of electricity. Students study batteries, currents and circuits and examine Ohm's law. Electron tubes, transistors and switching devices are looked at in how they are used in basic electronic devices.

Computer Installation and Repair Course

Through study of computer programming languages and software programs, students learn how to install software and troubleshoot a variety of problems. Students examine computer circuit boards, components and memory. Students learn how to recognize problems with the internal structure of the computer and how to repair damaged parts.
