Essential Information

Bodyguard courses are usually part of a certificate program in executive protection, security services or private investigation; they may occasionally be found in an associate or bachelor's degree program in criminal justice. Relevant courses in these programs include protection services, security, defense tactics and bodyguard ethics.

Certificate programs sometimes include an option for firearms training and can be completed rather quickly. It is also common for students to participate in field exercises in such programs. A criminal justice degree may lead to more opportunities for security manager employment in the future. Students in a degree program also benefit from studies in correctional systems, criminal law, criminal investigations and the criminology.

Upon graduation, bodyguards usually need state registration and receive more training on the job. Weapon carriers need to meet additional requirements, including passing a comprehensive background check and obtaining registration from the government.

List of Courses

Some example bodyguard courses in a certificate or degree program are described below.

Overview of Protection Services

Potential bodyguards take this required course when beginning their studies. The class includes the history of protection services, from its earliest inception through present day. Students examine the role and responsibility of private protection services, such as bodyguards versus public sector protection services.

Security and Protection Services

Students in this course get a comprehensive look at the roles and responsibilities of a bodyguard. They learn to perform advanced work for executive protection, such as scouting routes and securing their client's safety in open or closed locations. The syllabus typically includes risk assessment, how to address identified threats and preparing for the unexpected.

Defense Tactics for Bodyguards

Bodyguards need to be prepared to use force to protect a client. A course in defense tactics typically includes hand-to-hand defensive skills, firearms and martial arts training. Students learn when and how to use these techniques, as well as the potential physical and legal risks. This course typically includes extensive hands-on practice of techniques.

Bodyguard Ethics

Students enrolled in bodyguard classes learn to maintain their clients' privacy and exercise discretion in all business interactions with the client and on a client's behalf. An ethics class may be required in some bodyguard training programs. It may also include an overview of relevant laws.
