Texas has various 2-year colleges as well as one university that offer associate's degrees in accounting and accounting technology. Certificate programs are also available and require completion of 16-33 credit hours. These undergraduate programs are designed to prepare students for a career in bookkeeping and accounting assistance, and may include an internship. Austin Community College District

Austin Community College District, in Austin, Texas, offers three programs for students planning for an entry-level position in accounting and bookkeeping. The accounting clerk certificate program requires students to complete 32 credit hours, which includes an accounting technician/bookkeeping internship. Students in the accounting specialist program must complete 60 credit hours while those in the accounting technician program must complete 61.

Blinn College

Blinn College, in Brenham, Texas, offers a certificate program in accounting technology that trains students for an entry-level position in the field. The 30 semester-hour program includes coursework in basic accounting procedures and data entry. Students may transfer the credits to an Associate in Applied Science in Accounting degree program, which is offered on the Bryan, Texas campus.

Brookhaven College

Brookhaven College, in Farmers Branch, offers an associate degree and three certificate programs in accounting for students preparing for an entry-level career in the field. The associate degree program consists of four semesters of coursework. Students can receive the accounting clerk certificate after the completion of the first semester and the accounting assistant certificate after finishing the second semester.

Del Mar College

Corpus Christi based Del Mar College offers an associate degree and certificate program in accounting. The Associate in Applied Science - Accounting Specialist and accounting technician certificate programs prepare students for an entry-level position as bookkeeping or accounting clerks. The associate degree program requires over 60 credit hours in coursework while students in the certificate program must complete 33 credit hours.

El Centro College

El Centro College, in Dallas, Texas, offers three programs in accounting. To earn the accounting clerk certificate students must complete between 16 and 18 credit hours in courses such as the principles of accounting, keyboarding, business mathematics and computer applications. The accounting assistant certificate requires students to complete the coursework for an accounting clerk and additional courses such as the principles of accounting II, computerized accounting applications and English composition. Students in the associate degree program must complete the coursework for both certificate programs and an additional two semesters of courses such as economics, accounting specialty and social science.

El Paso Community College

The associate degree program in accounting at El Paso Community College, in El Paso, requires students to complete 60 credit hours. Courses in the two-year program include the principles of accounting, payroll and business tax accounting, computerized accounting applications, advanced spreadsheets, cost accounting and federal income tax. The certificate program in computerized accounting consists of 30 credit hours in courses such as the principles of accounting, business computer applications, payroll and business tax accounting and English composition.

San Antonio College

San Antonio College, in San Antonio, Texas, offers an associate degree and certificate programs in accounting technology. The associate degree program requires 60 credit hours in courses such as introduction to accounting, business English, computerized accounting, tax reporting, spreadsheets, business mathematics, individual federal income tax and business taxes. The accounting technician certificate requires 26 credit hours in courses such as numeric keypad applications, spreadsheets, business tax reporting, computerized accounting and word processing.

San Jacinto Community College

There is one certificate and one associate degree program available for aspiring bookkeepers at San Jacinto Community College in Pasadena, Texas. The associate degree program is completed in four terms in courses such as business law, business computer applications, accounting principles, individual federal tax, business ethics, payroll taxes, small business management, cost accounting, intermediate accounting and composition. The certificate of technology in accounting requires students to complete 33 credit hours.

Tarrant County College District

Tarrant County College District, in Fort Worth, Texas, offers two associate degrees and two certificate programs in accounting. The associate degree program in accounting information management includes coursework in financial accounting, managerial accounting and computerized accounting. The associate degree program in business administration - accounting assistant requires students to complete accounting and business management courses. Students in the accounting clerk I certificate program must complete 16 certificate hours in courses while those in the accounting clerk II certificate program must complete 25.

University of Texas at Brownsville

The University of Texas at Brownsville, in Brownsville, Texas, offers an accounting technology certificate program that prepares students for an entry-level position in the accounting and bookkeeping fields. The 19 credit-hour program includes coursework in federal income taxes, payroll and business tax accounting, computerized accounting applications and computerized accounting. Students must complete the courses with a grade of 'C' or higher to earn the certificate.
