Certification Class Overview

Some professions don't require an undergraduate degree, but instead may expect individuals to pass a certification exam in order to obtain entry-level employment. Many colleges and universities offer standalone courses, certificate programs and diploma programs that can prepare students for professional certification.

Types of Classes or Programs

Schools offer classes and programs leading to certification in many fields, including massage therapy, emergency medical care, nursing assistance and more. For example, students who want to become an emergency medical technician (EMT) at the basic level must take several classes or complete a certificate program at a college or EMT training facility. Graduates are prepared to take certification tests administered by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). Likewise, students may complete a certificate or diploma program in massage therapy that offers preparation for the certification exam administered by their respective state, or by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB).

Program Length

The number of class hours that a student takes depends on the area of study. For example, students taking classes to become a certified nursing assistant (CNA) are required to complete at least 75 hours of classes before taking a certification exam. Education programs for massage therapists vary, but may require up to 500 hours of classes and training that lead to certification. Prospective EMTs at the basic level may train for up to three months, participating in lecture-based sessions and clinical experiences.
