Essential Information

A career as a computer hardware engineer requires at least a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, computer engineering or a related field for entry-level employment. A bachelor's degree in computer engineering requires, at most, five years to complete. Programs normally start out with general education requirements and general engineering courses, and students specialize in a specific area during the latter two years. Many programs will also require students to complete internships prior to graduation.

Bachelor's in Computer Engineering

Bachelor-level engineering programs of study include courses in the physical and life sciences, mathematics and general engineering. In these programs, students will develop their understanding of software and design wired and wireless networks. The typical core curriculum offers hands-on experiences in laboratory clinics as well as incorporating classroom-based seminars. Field-specific topics of study include:

  • Computer system architecture
  • Computer systems installation
  • Computer maintenance
  • Programming techniques troubleshooting
  • Product design

Employment Outlook and Salary Information

According to the BLS, computer hardware engineers make an median annual salary of $111,730 as of May 2015. The job outlook for this career from 2014 to 2024 is expected to grow 3%, which is slower than average for all other occupations.

Continuing Education Information

Several organizations provide professional development support for computer hardware engineers, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the largest. IEEE provides numerous professional publications appropriate for many types of technical professionals (www.ieee.org). Additionally, networking, career development support and continuing educational opportunities are available for members.

Most entry-level positions in the field require at least a bachelor's degree in computer engineering. Bachelor's degree programs include a lot of hands-on training that coincides with typical work experiences.
